English

Although the relationship between colour and emotion has been extensively discussed in Western literary traditions as well as in other Indian languages, such focused critical engagement is largely absent in Odia literary discourse. From as early as the 2nd century BCE, Indian poetic traditions—particularly through the theory of rasa—have explored the association between various emotions (bhāvas) and colours; however, these discussions remain inadequate and fragmented.

The Indian epistemological tradition conceptualizes colour as a medium capable of awakening latent emotions embedded within human consciousness. The doctrine of aucitya (propriety) in Eastern poetics emphasizes the harmony between object and colour and highlights their associative and comparative relationships. Even though modern Odia literary critics (Banamali, 2013; Krushnachandra, 2018; Dilip, 2023) acknowledge the connection between colour and emotion, they have not sufficiently articulated how colours function to evoke diverse emotional responses.

Nevertheless, both Eastern and Western psychological and literary theories have established that individual colours possess the capacity to generate multiple emotional experiences. Therefore, the primary objective of this research-based paper is to examine and substantiate how colour and emotion in literature influence the psychological experience and sensibility of the reader or spectator, thereby stimulating literary imagination and aesthetic response.

Keywords: Color, basic color, words, emotions, literature and imagination, the relationship between color and emotion in literature.
