ଊନବିଂଶ ଶତାବ୍ଦୀ ଆଗରୁ ଆଧୁନିକ ରୀତିରେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଅଭିଧାନ ନଥିଲା। କାବ୍ୟ କବିତା ଲେଖିବା ପାଇଁ ସମାର୍ଥକ ଶବ୍ଦ ସବୁକୁ ନେଇ ଗୀତ ବା ଶ୍ଲୋକରେ କୋଷଗ୍ରନ୍ଥସବୁ ଲେଖାଯାଉଥିଲା। ଏନିବନ୍ଧରେ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ଭାରତୀୟ ଅଭିଧାନ ରଚନାଶୈଳୀ ସମ୍ପର୍କରେ ପ୍ରଥମେ ସୂଚନା ଦିଆଯାଇଛି ଓ ଔପନିବେଶିକ ପାଦ୍ରି/ପ୍ରଶାସକମାନଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ରଚିତ ଊନବିଂଶ ଶତାବ୍ଦୀର ଅଭିଧାନମାନଙ୍କର ନିର୍ମାଣରେ ଥିବା ସମସ୍ୟା ଓ ତା’ର ନିରାକରଣ ସମ୍ପର୍କରେ ଅନୁଶୀଳନ କରାଯାଇଛି। ପ୍ରାଥମିକ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟାୟରେ ନିର୍ମିତ ଏହି ଅଭିଧାନଗୁଡ଼ିକର ପଦ୍ଧତିଗତ ସମସ୍ୟା ଓ ନୂତନ ସଂଯୋଜନ କିପରି ପରବର୍ତ୍ତୀକାଳରେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଅଭିଧାନ ପଦ୍ଧତିକୁ ସମୃଦ୍ଧ କରିଛି, ତାହା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟାୟକ୍ରମେ ଉକ୍ତ ନିବନ୍ଧରେ ଆଲୋଚିତ ହୋଇଛି। ଯାହା ଉକ୍ତ ନିବନ୍ଧ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତିର ପ୍ରମୁଖ ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟ।

Prior to the nineteenth century, Odia dictionaries in the modern sense did not exist. In order to facilitate the composition of poetry and verse, lexical works were traditionally composed in the form of songs or metrical verses, incorporating lists of synonymous and supportive words. This paper first provides an overview of the classical Indian traditions of dictionary-making and lexicographical composition. It then undertakes a critical examination of the problems encountered in the compilation of Odia dictionaries during the nineteenth century, particularly those prepared by colonial missionaries and administrators, along with the measures adopted to address these challenges.
The dictionaries produced during this formative phase were marked by several methodological limitations. However, the innovative additions and evolving practices introduced in these early works played a significant role in enriching and systematizing Odia lexicographical methodology in later periods. The paper discusses, in a sequential and analytical manner, how these initial efforts—despite their structural shortcomings—contributed to the development and refinement of Odia dictionary-making traditions. This critical evaluation of problems and their resolutions constitutes the central objective of the present study.
