ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଆଧୁନିକ ସାହିତ୍ୟର ଏକ ବର୍ଦ୍ଧିଷ୍ଣୁ ବିଭାଗ। ଶହେ ବର୍ଷର ବିବର୍ତ୍ତନରେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ସାହିତ୍ୟରେ ଉପନ୍ୟାସର ବୈଚିତ୍ର‌୍ୟ ପରିଲକ୍ଷିତ। ସାହିତ୍ୟର ଅନ୍ୟାନ୍ୟ ବିଭାଗ ଅପେକ୍ଷା ଉପନ୍ୟାସର ପାଠକୀୟ ଆଦୃତି ସର୍ବାଧିକ। ନାରୀ ଜୀବନରେ ବିବିଧ ଚିତ୍ରର ଚିତ୍ରଣ ପାଇଁ ମଧ୍ୟ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଏକ ପ୍ରଶସ୍ତ କ୍ଷେତ୍ର। ଉପନ୍ୟାସର ବିସ୍ତୃତ କଳେବର ମଧ୍ୟରେ ନାରୀ ଚରିତ୍ରର ଭୂମିକା ତିନୋଟି ଦିଗରୁ ବିଶେଷ ଭାବରେ ବିଚାର କରାଯାଇପାରେ। ପ୍ରଥମତଃ ଆନନ୍ଦ ଦାନ, ଦ୍ୱିତୀୟତଃ ଶିକ୍ଷାଦାନ, ତୃତୀୟତଃ ଆଦର୍ଶ ବୋହୂ ପଣିଆ। ଏହି ତିନୋଟି ଗୁଣାବଳୀ ଭିତରେ ନାରୀର ଅନ୍ତରଙ୍ଗ ଓ ବର୍ହିରଙ୍ଗ ସ୍ୱରୂପକୁ ଉନ୍ମୋଚନ କରାଯାଇଥାଏ। ନାରୀ ମନର ଗଭୀରତା ତାର ବାହ୍ୟ ପ୍ରକାଶରୁ କଳନା କରିହୁଏ ନାହିଁ। ତେଣୁ ଔପନ୍ୟାସିକଙ୍କ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରେ ନାରୀ… ହୃଦୟମୟୀ… ମାନମୟୀ… ପୁଲକମୟୀ। ଫୁଲ ଠାରୁ କୋମଳ, ଆକାଶଠୁ ସୁନୀଳ, ସମୟ ଠାରୁ ମହୀୟସୀ, ସ୍ରୋତ ଠାରୁ ଅମୃତମୟୀ। ଶିଶୁର କୋମଳ ଡାକ ଭଳି ସମ୍ଭାବନାମୟୀ। ଅହଲ୍ୟା ପରି ଅଭିଶପ୍ତା, ମାଟିର ମହତୀ ଡାକର ନାଁ… ନାରୀ। ଏସବୁ ଅନ୍ତରଙ୍ଗ ଦିଗଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଔପନ୍ୟାସିକଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଭାବିତ କରିଛି। ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସର କେତୋଟି ବିଶିଷ୍ଟ ନାରୀ ଚରିତ୍ର ମାଧ୍ୟମରେ ଆମେ ନାରୀ ଜୀବନର ଅନ୍ତଃସୌନ୍ଦର୍ଯ୍ୟକୁ ଅନୁଭବ କରିପାରିବା। ଏହି ଆଲୋଚନା ପ୍ରସଙ୍ଗରେ ମୁଁ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସର ସାନ୍ତାଣୀ, ଚିତ୍ରକଳା, ଗଉରା, ସତୀ ଓ ଧୋବୀ ଚରିତ୍ରକୁ ପରିସରଭୁକ୍ତ କରିଛି।

Novel is a growing genre of modern literature. In the evolution of a hundred years, the uniqueness of the novel is observed in Odia literature. The readership of the novel is the highest compared to other genres of literature. The novel is also a wide field for depicting various scenes in the life of a woman. In the vast body of the novel, the role of the female character can be considered from three perspectives. First, the gift of joy, second, the gift of education, and third, the ideal wife. In these three qualities, the inner and outer forms of a woman are revealed. The depth of a woman’s mind cannot be judged from her outer appearance. Therefore, in the eyes of the novelist, a woman is… heart-shaped… mind-shaped… flower-shaped. Softer than a flower, bluer than the sky, more majestic than time, more nectar-shaped than a stream. As possible as the soft cry of a child. As cursed as Ahalya, the name of the great cry of the earth is… woman. These intimate aspects have influenced Odia novelists. Through some prominent female characters of Odia novels, we can experience the inner beauty of a woman’s life. In this discussion topic, I have included the characters of Santani, Chitrakala, Gaura, Sati and Dhobi in Odia novels.
