ପରାଧୀନତାର ଘନଅନ୍ଧାର ମଧ୍ୟରେ ମୁକ୍ତିକାମୀ ମଣିଷ ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତାର ଆଲୋକମୟ ସ୍ୱପ୍ନ ଦେଖୁଥିଲା। ତା’ର ଆଶା ଓ ବିଶ୍ୱାସ ଥିଲା, ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ଆସିଲେ ଦୁଃଖ, ଦୁର୍ଦ୍ଦଶା ଦୂର ହେବ, ଗ୍ରାମାଞ୍ଚଳର ବିକାଶ ଘଟିବ ଏବଂ ଅନ୍ୟାୟ, ଅତ୍ୟାଚାରର ଅବସାନ ହେବ। କିନ୍ତୁ ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ପରବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଭାରତରେ ଅନେକ ସାମାଜିକ ଓ ରାଜନୈତିକ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ସହ ଗ୍ରାମ୍ୟ ଜୀବନଧାରାରେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଅବକ୍ଷୟ ଦେଖାଦେଲା। ସହରର ବିକାଶ, କଳକାରଖାନା ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠା ଓ ଅର୍ଥମୋହ ଯୋଗୁଁ ଗ୍ରାମବାସୀ ସହରାଭିମୁଖୀ ହେଲେ, ଚାଷଜମି ପଡ଼ିଆ ପଡ଼ିଲା ଏବଂ ପଲ୍ଲୀର କୁଡ଼ିଆ ଘର ଭାଙ୍ଗିବାକୁ ଲାଗିଲା। ଏଥିସହ ଭାଗବତ ଟୁଙ୍ଗୀ, କୀର୍ତ୍ତନ ଆଖଡ଼ା, ସାଂସ୍କୃତିକ ପରମ୍ପରା ଓ ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀ ଜୀବନରେ ଶୂନ୍ୟତା ସୃଷ୍ଟି ହେଲା। ଧାନକ୍ଷେତ, ଆମ୍ବତୋଟା ଓ କୋଇଲିର କୁହୁତାନରେ ମୁଖରିତ ପଲ୍ଲୀର ଶାନ୍ତ, ସୁନ୍ଦର ପରିବେଶ କ୍ରମେ ନଷ୍ଟ ହେବା ସହ ଆଧୁନିକ ଯୁଗରେ ପଲ୍ଲୀଜୀବନ ଅଧୋଗତି ଆଡ଼କୁ ଗତିକଲା। ଓଡ଼ିଆ ନାଟକରେ ଯାହାର ଚିତ୍ର ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ପ୍ରତିଫଳିତ। ଏହାକୁ ଦେଖେଇଦେବା ହିଁ ଉକ୍ତ ଆଲୋଚନାର ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟ।

Amidst the thick darkness of subjugation, people yearning for liberation dreamt of a bright future of freedom. They held the hope and belief that the arrival of independence would dispel their suffering and misery, foster the development of rural areas, and put an end to injustice and oppression. However, in post-independence India, alongside various social and political shifts, a decline began to affect rural life. Driven by urban development, the establishment of industries, and a pursuit of material wealth, villagers migrated toward cities; farmlands were left fallow, and the humble huts of the countryside began to crumble. Concurrently, a void emerged in the Bhagabata Tungi (traditional village community centers), Kirtana Akhada (communal devotional gathering spaces), cultural traditions, and the very fabric of community life. As the tranquil and beautiful environment of the village—characterized by paddy fields, mango groves, and the melodious calls of the cuckoo—gradually deteriorated, rural life in the modern era began a decline. This process is clearly reflected in Odia drama, and the purpose of this discussion is to highlight that very aspect.
