ମୂଳ ସଂସ୍କୃତ ‘ବେତାଳ ପଞ୍ଚବିଂଶତି’ ଭାରତୀୟ କଥାସାହିତ୍ୟର ଏକ ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ରଚନା। ଓଡ଼ିଆ ସାହିତ୍ୟର ପ୍ରାରମ୍ଭିକ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟାୟରେ ପଦ୍ୟସାହିତ୍ୟର ପ୍ରାଧାନ୍ୟ ରହିଥିବାବେଳେ ଗଦ୍ୟରଚନାର ପରିମାଣ ତୁଳନାତ୍ମକ ଭାବେ ସ୍ୱଳ୍ପ ଥିଲା। ଏହି ସୀମିତ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଗଦ୍ୟସାହିତ୍ୟ ଭଣ୍ଡାର ମଧ୍ୟରେ ‘ବେତାଳ ପଞ୍ଚବିଂଶତି’ର ଓଡ଼ିଆ ରୂପ ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ସ୍ଥାନ ଅଧିକାର କରିଛି। ଏହାର ମୂଳ କଥାବସ୍ତୁ ସଂସ୍କୃତ ‘କଥାସରିତ୍‌ସାଗର’ ସହିତ ସମ୍ପୃକ୍ତ। ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଭାଷାରେ ଏହା ‘ବେତାଳ ପଞ୍ଚିଶା’ ବା ‘ବେତାଳ ପଚିଶା’ ନାମରେ ପରିଚିତ। ଏହାର କେତେକ ପୋଥିରେ ଶିବଦାସଙ୍କ ନାମ ଭଣିତା ଭାବେ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖ ରହିଥିବାବେଳେ ଦାମୋଦର ଦାସ, ଗଉରଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ଓ କବି ମୁକୁନ୍ଦଙ୍କ ନାମ ମଧ୍ୟ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ପାଠରୂପ ସହିତ ସମ୍ପୃକ୍ତ। ଏହି ରଚନାର ଗଦ୍ୟ ଓ ପଦ୍ୟ-ଉଭୟ ରୂପରେ ପୋଥି ଉପଲବ୍ଧ ହେବା ଏହାର ପାଠପରମ୍ପରାକୁ ଅଧିକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ କରିଛି। ବିଭିନ୍ନ ପୋଥିର ପାଠଭେଦ, ଭାଷାଗତ ବୈଶିଷ୍ଟ୍ୟ, ରଚନାଶୈଳୀ ଓ ଆଖ୍ୟାନ ପରିବେଷଣରେ ଥିବା ପାର୍ଥକ୍ୟ ଏହାର ସାହିତ୍ୟିକ ଓ ପାଠଗତ ବିଶ୍ଳେଷଣ ପାଇଁ ନୂତନ ଦିଗ ଉନ୍ମୋଚନ କରେ। ସେହିସବୁ ଦିଗକୁ ଉନ୍ମୋଚନ କରିବା ଏହି ପ୍ରବନ୍ଧର ମୁଖ୍ୟ ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟ ।

The original Sanskrit work Vetala Panchavimshati is a renowned piece of Indian narrative literature. In the early stages of Odia literature, verse was predominant, while prose works were relatively scarce. Within this limited corpus of early Odia prose, the Odia version of Vetala Panchavimshati holds a significant place. Its core narrative is linked to the Sanskrit Kathasaritsagara. In the Odia language, it is known as Vetala Panchisha or Vetala Pachisha. While some manuscripts mention the name ‘Shivadasa’ in the bhanita (authorial signature/colophon), the names of Damodara Dasa, Gaurachandra, and Kabi Mukunda are also associated with various versions of the text. The availability of manuscripts for this work in both prose and verse forms lends greater significance to its textual tradition. Variations in the text across different manuscripts—including linguistic features, stylistic nuances, and differences in the presentation of the narrative—open up new avenues for literary and textual analysis. The primary objective of this essay is to explore these various dimensions.
