ଜୀବ ଜଗତରେ ଅନ୍ୟାନ୍ୟ ପ୍ରାଣୀମାନଙ୍କ ଅପେକ୍ଷା ମାନବର ଯୌନ ଚେତନା ବହୁ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରୁ ସ୍ୱତନ୍ତ୍ର। ମାନବ ଜୀବନର ଏହା ସ୍ୱାଭାବିକ ଆବେଗ। ଏହା କେବଳ ଶାରିରୀକ ଆକାଂକ୍ଷା ନୁହେଁ ବରଂ ଭାବନାତ୍ମକ ଆବେଦନ। ଏହି ଚେତନା ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ଜୀବନର ଏକ ସହଜାତ ପ୍ରବୃତ୍ତି। ଓଡ଼ିଆ ସାହିତ୍ୟରେ ଏହି ଦେହବାଦ ଆଦି କାଳରୁ ଆଧୁନିକ କାଳ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଭିନ୍ନ ଭିନ୍ନ ରୂପରେ ପ୍ରକଟିତ। ପୁରାତନ ଓ ମଧ୍ୟଯୁଗୀୟ କବିତାରେ ଯୌନଚେତନା ଅଳଙ୍କାରିକ ଓ ଆଧ୍ୟାତ୍ମିକ ଆବରଣ ଭିତରେ ପ୍ରକାଶ ଲାଭ କରିଥିବା ବେଳେ ଆଧୁନିକ ଯୁଗର କବିତାରେ ଯୌନଚେତନା ଆଦର୍ଶ ଓ ନୀତି ନିଷ୍ଠତା ମଧ୍ୟରେ ପ୍ରତିଫଳିତ। ସେହିପରି ଉତ୍ତର ଆଧୁନିକ କାଳର କବିତାର ଯୌନ ପରିଚର୍ଚ୍ଚା ମନୋବୈଜ୍ଞାନିକ ଶୈଳୀକୁ ଆପଣାଇ ନେଇଛି ତେବେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ କବିତାରେ ଯୌନ ଚେତନା ସାହିତ୍ୟକୁ ଅଧିକ ରସସିକ୍ତ କରିଛି। ସଠିକ୍ ଉପସ୍ଥାନାରେ ଯୌନ ଚେତନା ଅଶ୍ଲୀଳ ନୁହେଁ ବରଂ ସତ୍ୟ ଶିବ ସୁନ୍ଦର ନିରାଜନାର ମାଧ୍ୟମ। ଏହା ଚର୍ଚ୍ଚା କରିବା ହେଉଛି ଏହି ପ୍ରବନ୍ଧର ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟ ।

In the animal kingdom, human sexual consciousness is distinct in many respects compared to that of other creatures. It is a natural impulse in human life—not merely a physical desire, but an emotional appeal. This consciousness is an innate human instinct. In Odia literature, this preoccupation with the corporeal has manifested in various forms from ancient times to the modern era. While in ancient and medieval poetry, sexual consciousness was expressed through metaphorical and spiritual veils, in modern poetry, it is reflected within the framework of ideals and moral integrity. Similarly, in post-modern poetry, the discourse on sexuality has adopted a psychological approach. Ultimately, sexual consciousness has served to enrich Odia literature, imbuing it with a deeper aesthetic essence. When presented appropriately, sexual consciousness is not obscene; rather, it serves as a medium for the manifestation of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty (Satya, Shiva, Sundara). The purpose of this essay is to explore this subject.
