Indian culture expresses gratitude toward every element that fulfills the necessities of life—whether animate or inanimate, natural or man-made. In a land that embraces such an elevated philosophy, food (grain) is revered as ‘Brahma’ (the Divine). Consequently, to accord due respect to this essential element, various communities perform rituals to worship grain at different times. Examples of such traditions can be found in the ‘Dhana-Manika Puja’ of Odia culture and the ‘Itu Puja’ of Bengali culture; in these observances, the harvested grain is regarded as a manifestation of the Divine Mother (Devi) and is worshipped with great pomp and grandeur. This essay discusses the rituals and beliefs associated with the observance of these two forms of worship, compares the modes and objectives of worship across the two regions, and explores the lofty ideals underlying these practices.
Keywords: Dhanamanika Puja, Itu Puja, sara, sera, mana, paddy, grain, tradition, worship, ritual, women, goddess, etc.
