ପ୍ରେମ ଭୂମିରୁ ଭୂମା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ପରିବ୍ୟାପ୍ତ। ପ୍ରେମ ଦେହର ମିଳନରେ ଗଢ଼ିଉଠେ ନାହିଁ, ଏହା ଆତ୍ମାର ମିଳନ। କେବଳ ମାନବ ଜୀବନ କାହିଁକି; ଇତର ପ୍ରାଣୀଙ୍କ ଭିତରେ ମଧ୍ୟ ସର୍ବଦା ସନ୍ନିହିତ। ସାହିତ୍ୟର ଆଦ୍ୟ ଅନ୍ୱେଷା ହିଁ ପ୍ରେମ। ପ୍ରେମ ବିନା ଏ ଜଗତ ଅନ୍ତସାରହୀନ। କିନ୍ତୁ, ନଈକେ ବାଙ୍କ ଦେଶ କେ ଫାଙ୍କ ପରି ସମୟ ସ୍ରୋତରେ ପ୍ରେମର ସଂଜ୍ଞା ମଧ୍ୟ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ଘଟିଛି। ଆଧୁନିକ କାଳରେ ଯାହା ପ୍ରେମର ସଂଜ୍ଞା ଧାରଣ କରେ ତାହା କ’ଣ ବାସ୍ତବ ପ୍ରେମର ନିଦର୍ଶନ? ଏହା ପାଠକ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ପ୍ରଶ୍ନବାଚୀ ଆଣିଥାଏ। ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ପ୍ରେମ ଆଉ ମନ ମିଳନରେ ଗଠିତ ନୁହଁ ବାସନାର ପୂର୍ତ୍ତିରେ ହିଁ ପ୍ରେମର ପରିପ୍ରାପ୍ତି। ପ୍ରେମ ରୂପ ଆକର୍ଷଣରୁ ସୃଷ୍ଟି ହୋଇ ଦୈହିକ ସମ୍ପର୍କରେ ପରିସମାପ୍ତି ଘଟୁଛି। ଦୈହିକ ପ୍ରେମ କେବଳ ଯୁବପିଢ଼ିଙ୍କୁ ପଥଭ୍ରଷ୍ଟ କରୁନାହିଁ, ବୈବାହିକ ଜୀବନରେ ଦମ୍ପତିଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଫାଟ ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରିଛି। ପ୍ରେମ ଉଜୁଡ଼ା ବସାର ବାଇଚଢ଼େଇ ପରି ପଥଭ୍ରଷ୍ଟ। ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ପୂର୍ବବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଗଳ୍ପରେ କିପରି ରୂପାୟିତ ତାହା ବିଚାର ଯୋଗ୍ୟ। ଗଳ୍ପର ଉନ୍ମେଷ କାଳରୁ ଦେଶ ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଗଳ୍ପ ସାହିତ୍ୟରେ ପ୍ରେମର ନିଦର୍ଶନ କିପରି ଫୁଟିଉଠିଛି ତାହା ଆମେ ଦେଖିପାରିବା ଏହି କାଳଖଣ୍ଡର ଗାଳ୍ପିକଙ୍କ ଗଳ୍ପରେ।

Love is widespread from earth to earth. Love cannot be formed by the union of bodies, it is the union of souls. Why only human life; it is always connected with other living beings as well. Love is the original quest of literature. Without love, this world is heartless. However, like a gap in a country, the definition of love has also changed over time. Is the definition of love in modern times an indication of real love? This raises questions among the readers. Now love is no longer formed by the union of minds, love is achieved only through the fulfillment of desires. Love is born from attraction and ends in physical relations. Physical love not only misleads the youth, it has created a rift between couples in married life. Love is as misguided as a homeless man. How it is portrayed in pre-independence Odia stories is worth considering. We can see how the expression of love has been evident in Odia short story literature, from the beginning of the story to the country’s independence, in the stories of the storytellers of this period.
